One Take Super 8 Event ~ Registration

CineVic is SUPER excited to announce Vancouver Island’s second edition of the One Take Super 8 Event — this time in full Kodak colour! A fun, non-competitive, community-driven creation and exhibition opportunity for intrigued newbies, amateur artists, and professional filmmakers alike. 

Super 8 film took the world by storm in the 1960s and 70s as an accessible way to make “home movies.” Today, the format lives on as an analogue escape from our digital world. The One Take Super 8 Event began in 2000 in Regina SK, and since then it has inspired the creation and screening of over 1,000 films in 50 locations around the world.

This is an open call for YOU to participate. Discover the nostalgia, creativity, and joy of celluloid film by making your own 3-minute Super 8 movie. No experience necessary! Registration is restricted to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands area, as participants will need to access the film, camera, and local screening in Victoria BC.

Registration Fee:
$25 CineVic Members
$50 Non-Members

Registration includes:

• One Super 8 colour film cartridge, approximately 3 minutes long
• Access to a Super 8 camera from CineVic for one week
• Super 8 film webinar – Tuesday July 13th @ 12:00pm PDT on Zoom
• Film processing and digital scan
• Artist screening fee (we pay you to show your work!)
• Public screening event in Fall 2021 (details TBA and pending provincial health orders)

What does “one-take” mean?

• You may choose to film your movie in one continuous shot, or plan it all out scene-by-scene, or simply create a collage of images.
• No editing and no re-takes. If you shoot it, we see it — in the same order it was shot.
• Super 8 film does not record sound. You are encouraged to create and submit a separate digital soundtrack that will be played alongside the film projection. Note this will be a manual process and sound might not sync perfectly with your images. Silent films are okay too!
• No peeking – you will see your finished film for the first time along with the audience.

FREE Super 8 camera and webinar!

Participants are encouraged to attend a free webinar on Tuesday July 13th to learn the ins and outs of Super 8 film and cameras, as well as tips and tricks to stage your one-take production. A recording will be available if you cannot attend.

CineVic camera bookings are available on a first-come first-serve basis. After you register, please email [email protected] to arrange pickup of your film cartridge and camera from CineVic headquarters in downtown Victoria. Cameras may also be borrowed from elsewhere, or dig your own out of that box in the basement!

Timeline of important dates:

• Monday July 12th: Registration deadline
• Tuesday July 13th @ 12:00pm PDT on Zoom: Super 8 Webinar (recording will be available)
• July/August: Pick a week to shoot your film
• Friday August 27th: All films and cameras returned to CineVic by 2:00pm (no extensions!)
• Friday September 24th: All digital soundtrack files submitted by 2:00pm (soundtrack encouraged but not required)
• October (date TBA): Public screening premiere!

Please note: Films must be submitted by the deadline, as they will immediately be shipped away for processing that same day. Late films will NOT be processed or screened, and your artist screening fee will be forfeited.
