Film Production Workshop: Location Sound and RED Camera Setup

Presented by CineVic and MAVNetwork.

MAVNetwork is a local production network focused on training and hiring members of the underrepresented film community.

CineVic is an artist-run society supporting independent filmmakers and media artists with accessible programming, affordable equipment, professional development resources, and cinematic exhibition opportunities since 1991.

We acknowledge and respect the long and continuing history of the Lək̓ʷəŋən-speaking people, now known as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations, on whose traditional and unceded territory we carry out our creative activities.

This intensive two-day workshop is for technicians to learn more about industry practices and problem-solving, for location sound recording and on set camera operation in a scripted scenario. A basic understanding of audio principles, camera setup, and some location sound experience is preferred but not mandatory.

Instructors Lesley Marshall and Daniel Taggart-Hodge will lead the workshop by employing terminology of anti-oppression based filmmaking and horizontal leadership structures. Please note this workshop is in-person only, and participants are expected to participate in both days.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn:

  • Planning and set-up for a location
  • Various mics, placements, boom operation
  • Workflow with frequently used mixers
  • Timecode generators
  • Responding to common problems

Camera Workflow:
