ABOUT US
CineVic is an artist-run society committed to independent filmmaking. We offer artistic development opportunities, screenings, seminars, workshops, equipment access, and hands-on experience in media arts production to professionals, beginners and all skill levels in between. CineVic Society of Independent Filmmakers is a registered non-profit society under the B.C. Societies Act.
CineVic is host to an array of events and networking opportunities. Our events include, but are not limited to:
• Ongoing workshops covering a wide range of topics including screenwriting, producing, directing, cinematography, editing, acting/casting, grantwriting, ...
• Film production and screening programs such as CINESPARK and the One Take Super 8 Event.
• Screenings and exhibitions of independent, local, national, international, and member works such as our annual Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival.
• Professional artists and speakers engaging in mentorship, workshops, and panel discussions of their practice and approach to filmmaking.
• See our events calendar for more info >>
CineVic has a library of over 1,000 film and book titles in 8mm, 16mm, VHS and DVD. We are one of the only places to find NFB classics on Vancouver Island. A complete list of films is available here and a list of books available here.
Items are loaned FREE OF CHARGE to the public. There is a limit of five titles for one month at a time. Late charges will apply.
CineVic offers professional development opportunities for established filmmakers as well as entry level opportunities for emerging artists. Topics covered span the spectrum from producing and funding, lighting, sound and editing to working with actors and hand-processing film. Workshops are open to the public at non-member rates and can be created or suggested by CineVic members. Selected workshops are accessible by members in exchange for CineCredits earned through extra volunteer time. Check in with the office or refer back to our workshops page.
Short Circuit
In 2012 CineVic resurrected our short film festival with an emphasis on independent work coming out of the Cascadia region. Short Circuit: A Celebration of Pacific Northwest Film ran for four years, and in 2016 we expanded the festival to showcase work from all around the Pacific Ocean. Short Circuit: Pacific Rim Film Festival is now presented annually. Calls for submission and screening information can be found at www.shortcircuitfilmfestival.com
Victoria Film Festival
The Victoria Independent Film and Video Festival was born at CineVic in 1995 and eventually grew beyond our society into its own entity, the Victoria Film Festival. Over two decades later the festival is still going strong!

ABOUT MEMBERSHIP
CineVic is an artist-run society and relies on contributions made by those involved. All you have to do is walk in the door, or peruse this site to find out what's currently going on. We post our activities on our website, social media, and email newsletter which also lists resources and opportunities such as funding and application deadlines, competitions, grants, festival submissions, casting/crew calls etc. You may subscribe to our email newsletter at the bottom of this website.
There are numerous events and programs offered by CineVic that are open to the public. However, members receive benefits such as discounted rates on things like workshops and equipment rental.
See our Membership page for a listing of the requirements and benefits of each membership level, and when you're ready, fill out our online Membership Application Form.
Members are welcome to help with setup/teardown of events, assist at workshops and artist talks, distribute posters, or there are always plenty of tasks to do around the office. Please contact us if you are itching to volunteer or need to complete your required hours for membership. Members often volunteer on each others' productions to each CineCredits. Please note that all volunteer time must be accurately recorded with the office.
ABOUT EQUIPMENT
Check our Equipment page for details.
Anyone can rent equipment at non-member rates, as long as they demonstrate an aptitude with the gear they are borrowing. To rent at member rates, the Producer or Director who retains creative control over the project must be a member, must be the one to sign the equipment rental agreement, and also must demonstrate an aptitude with its operation and care. Members may not borrow equipment for someone else's project.
Our edit suite is now free of charge for members! We have a Mac Pro system equipped with Final Cut Pro X and Blackmagic Ultra Studio with 5.1 surround sound capabilities. For traditional 16mm editors we have access to an eight-plate Steenbeck (however this machine is currently in storage), neg cutting/conforming gear and some Super 8 equipment.
Depends. Contact [email protected] to discuss.
ABOUT FILMMAKING
