Film Production Workshop – Location Sound and RED Camera

MAVNetwork is a local production network focused on training and hiring members of the underrepresented film community.
CineVic is an artist-run society supporting independent filmmakers and media artists with accessible programming, affordable equipment, professional development resources, and cinematic exhibition opportunities since 1991.

Back by popular demand, this intensive two-day workshop is for technicians to learn more about filmmaking practices and problem-solving, for location sound recording and on set camera operation in a scripted scenario. A basic understanding of audio principles, camera setup, and some location sound experience is preferred but not mandatory.
This workshop is intended for self-identifying members of underrepresented communities in the film industry including: BIPOC, gender expansive, women-identifying, member of the disabled community or disabled, queer or LGBTQ2SIA+, the generationally poor / low-income, or another affected community not listed here.
Instructors Lesley Marshall and Daniel Taggart-Hodge will lead the workshop by employing terminology of anti-oppression based filmmaking and horizontal leadership structures. Please note this workshop is in-person only, and participants are expected to attend both days.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn:
Location Sound:
- Planning and set-up for a location
- Various mics, placements, boom operation
- Workflow with frequently used mixers
- Timecode generators
- Responding to common problems
Camera Workflow:
- Setup of tripod, RED Gemini camera, basic lights
- Integration with location sound technician
- Calling a location as a 1st AD
- Basic framing techniques and camera usage
- Basic lighting techniques
Takeaways:
- Record, catalog, and review location sound
- Problem-solve general issues that can come up on set
- Familiarize with best practices and gear to use/rent/purchase

Lesley Marshall is an award-winning independent filmmaker, former adjunct professor of film at Carleton University, instructor and technical workshop coordinator at Digital Arts Resource Centre (SAW Video). Lesley is the writer of the DIY Sound Tech for Women handbook funded by Community Arts Ottawa.
Daniel Taggart-Hodge is a Vancouver Island based audio engineer, location sound technician and foley artist for the film and television industry. Past credits include: A Cedar is Life (2022), Ballistic (2021), and Tzouhalem (2021). Daniel is motivated by synthesizers and sound design.

Call for SCRIPTS:
For this workshop we are looking for 2 scripts that are 2-3 pages, with 1-2 characters in the comedy genre for our participants to practice.
Scripts will be chosen based on the best fit for our workshop format, and will receive a small honorarium. Selected scripts will receive a $25 honorarium. Selected writers will not be invited to the workshop, however you are welcome to register for a ticket if you would like to participate. Footage will not be provided as it is for workshop purposes only.

Call for ACTORS:
For this workshop we are looking for 2 actors to read roles from short scripts on-camera. Actors will be needed 1pm-5pm on December 2nd and 3rd.
Rate: $25/hour x 8 hours total
We will provide printed scripts, 2-3 pages each. As this is a workshop intended for members of the underrepresented film community, priority will be given to those actors that self-identify as BIPOC, gender expansive, women-identifying, member of the disabled community or disabled, queer or LGBTQ2SIA+, the generationally poor / low-income, or another affected community not listed here. We will provide printed scripts, 2-3 pages each. Footage will not be provided as it is for workshop purposes only.
