Black Lives Matter

Black lives matter. Black voices matter. Black stories matter.

CineVic stands in solidarity with Black communities and allies in Victoria and all over the world who are standing up to condemn systemic racism and violations of basic human rights. Our mandate of supporting artists refers not only to providing creation and exhibition resources but also to upholding the health, safety, and social needs of our community. We denounce systems of oppression and acknowledge that only concrete actions will lead to societal change.

In this turbulent time, both individuals and organizations must look inward, reflect, and acknowledge responsibility. While CineVic's membership and programming has always been open to everyone regardless of gender, racial, social, political, religious or economic status, we recognize there is still a long way to go in truly increasing the diversity of voices represented within our organization. Those of us who occupy positions of privilege can no longer be silent -- we must speak up and do the hard work of enacting change. We are committed to listen, learn, and do better.

We are using this time to work toward ongoing decolonization of our organization and implementation of anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies. Upcoming and newly developed programming will focus on amplifying the voices of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour community members. This includes workshops, a tentative return of our One Take Super 8 Event, and a post-pandemic national tour of our Short Circuit Film Festival. We join in the fight for a more equitable future. Please see below for more resources and postings.
