One Take Super 8 🎬 Registration 2025

June 9

Register now for the One Take Super 8 and make a short analogue movie to be screened live on celluloid film!

This is an open call for you to participate in a worldwide initiative from right here in Victoria. Discover the nostalgia and joy of Super 8 by making your own 3-minute short film. Spots are limited for this fun, non-competitive, community-driven film creation and screening opportunity for curious newbies, artists, hobbyists, or even professional filmmakers. No experience necessary.

All participants this year will have access to the brand new Kodak Super 8 digital/analogue hybrid camera! Technically not yet available in Canada, but with elbows up we’ve got two of these cameras ready to roll. 🙂

What is the One Take Super 8?

Super 8 film took the world by storm in the 1960s and 70s as an accessible way to make “home movies.” Today, the format remains an analogue escape from our digital world. The One Take Super 8 was started in the year 2000 by Alex Rogalski in Regina, Saskatchewan — since then it has inspired the creation and screening of thousands of films in more than 50 international locations. CineVic proudly brings OTS8 back again for its 6th edition on Vancouver Island, and the 25th anniversary of the founding event.

What does “one-take” mean?

• You may choose to film your movie in one continuous shot, or plan it all out scene-by-scene, or simply record a collage of images.
• No editing and no re-takes. If you film it, we see it, in the same order it was shot.
• Super 8 film does not record sound, so you will need to record any “sync” sound with a separate device. You are encouraged to create and submit a digital soundtrack that will be played alongside the film projection. Please note this will be a live, manual process and sound might not match perfectly with your images during the screening. Silent films are okay too!
• No peeking – you will see your finished film for the first time along with the audience at two community screenings.

Registration Deadline:
Monday June 9th 2025 @ 11:59pm

Registration Fee:
$100 CineVic Members
$150 Non-Members

Registration Includes:
• Access to a Super 8 camera from CineVic for one week, plus a hands-on tutorial
• One Super 8 film cartridge, your choice of colour or black & white, approx. 3:20 minutes long
• Film processing and digital video scan, copies provided to you after the screening
• Public screenings in October 2025
• Artist screening fee paid back to you!

Registration Lottery:
Due to the insatiable demand for this program we employ a lottery system to allow more participants the chance at making a film, and to ensure that at least half of our participants are doing OTS8 for the first time. While a few spots are reserved for our community partners, the remaining spots are open to the public. Submit your registration form before the June 9th deadline — then we will email registrants after June 10th letting you know whether your name has been drawn in the lottery — you will then have 48 hours to provide payment to lock in your spot, otherwise your registration will be forfeited and we’ll draw a new name.

Registration is restricted to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands area, as participants will need to pick up / drop off the film and camera at our headquarters in Victoria BC.

*Registration is now closed*

A Super 8 Summer!
Each participant will have a camera for a one-week loan period, Friday to Thursday. After your name is chosen in the lottery and your spot is locked in with payment, we will contact you to arrange dates for pickup and dropoff of your film cartridge and camera at CineVic headquarters in downtown Victoria.
